International Space Station (ISS)

Dear _____,

How's life on Earth? Are you almost done with your architecture PhD? Hope you can come out on the next shuttle. It’s kind of difficult taking care of Lily and keeping up to work all at once. Oh yeah, Lily’s doing fine, gaining mass like she should. It’s amazing, she being the first kid born on the ISS and all.

Well, in answer to your query in the latest email, Jade’s doing fine, despite the microgravity, I treadmill-walk her every day. Believe it or not, she actually loves it!

You know, there are a lot of things on Earth that I used to take for granted. Like taking a warm, relaxing shower. Here we have to take sponge baths, and having to vacuum off the remaining water to be purified and reused, although asteroids are being drilled at this very moment. You can imagine how difficult bathing lily is! I usually wash her in the mornings, as that’s when she’s the happiest and most corporative. Regular food is another thing I used to take for granted. Military Meals Ready to Eat are readily available, but not very scrumptious, that’s for sure, and therefore, if you want copasetic food, you’ll go to Internationally Scrumptious. I can personally recommend it.

Choosing outfits is completely different as well. Since getting out here may become difficult, as little weight as possible is taken. This means, of course, as few clothes are taken as possible. We have a few pairs of everything, and not much else. However the positive part of this is that everything is comfortable. No more itchy collars! No more tight elastic! Halleluiah!

Sanitation is a bit strange. Either you wear a “Super Slurper” like Lily, or go in an odd latrine that the drain leads to the same place as the used Shower water does.

Going outside the station isn’t fun either. First I have to make sure Lily’s either in her Baby Bubble or being taken care of by one of the others. Then I put on my space suit. Next i make sure both hatches are shut and that I’m tethered before leaving out the outer hatch.

See what I mean? Hey, I’ve gotta go, Lily just woke up.
